On whether to disable comments

July 2022 Update: After reading more blogs, I’ve come to find that enabling comments is actually unnecessary. I don’t have time to moderate anyway, so I like keeping things like this.

Every time I check my admin page, I get a mini anxiety attack from the anticipation of seeing a comment.

I irrationally expect every single comment to be criticism—not just regular criticism, but angry and vehement tirades that will occupy my attention for hours to days. Worse, I expect the criticism to be so logical and well-reasoned it completely destroys everything I have ever stood for. (CBT fans rejoice; surely you recognise these cognitive distortions?)

Having seen nothing but criticism in the past, I’ve come to expect that anyone who talks to me would have to be angry with me, as people generally avoid talking to me otherwise.

This expectation of inordinately-hostile criticism makes it difficult for me to deal with comments in a rational manner, but I’ll toss a coin.

If it’s heads, I’ll leave everything up.

The coin hath spoken

Okay, I understand that this is not a healthy way to deal with insecurity, but this is also a little exaggerated. Comments will be back up eventually when I have more free time to manage them (what a convenient excuse to avoid addressing my insecurity! I think I deserve some praise for this).
